TRUMP is killing Globalization! That’s a good thing!

For decades, Africans were told a simple story: Globalization would integrate Africa into prosperity.
Trade would lift all boats. Institutions would stabilize nations. Development would follow. It didn’t.

Today, even the architects of globalization are questioning it. The United States under Donald Trump and the political movement around him has openly declared that globalization failed America and must be dismantled. Their argument is not emotional; it is strategic, and here is the uncomfortable truth Africans must face:

If globalization is failing America, remember it devastated and continues to devastate Africa!

The Trump and his administration’s critique of globalization rest on four core claims: Deindustrialization globalization exported American manufacturing and hollowed out domestic capacity. Asymmetric Trade or Free trade benefited competitors more than producers at home. Loss of Sovereignty as global institutions constrained national decision making. Elite capture because gains flowed upward, not outward, concentrating wealth and power.

Whether one supports Trump or not is irrelevant. What matters is this: The global system was never neutral. It was designed to serve those who wrote the rules. Africa did not write the rules.

Africa’s Long Exploitation: Before and After “Globalization”.

Africa’s exploitation did not begin with globalization, but globalization professionalized it. Slavery extracted human capital at scale. Colonialism reorganized economies around extraction, not development. Post independence globalization locked Africa into raw material exports, import dependency, foreign-currency debt, and externally defined “reforms”

Institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank did not free African economies. They disciplined them often enforcing austerity, privatization, and market openness before domestic capacity existed. This is not conspiracy. It is structure. Africa was globalized without power, without leverage, and without protection. In my opinion, “modern slavery”!

Why Globalization Hurt Africa More Than Anyone

Globalization assumed three things Africa did not have: Strong states to negotiate terms, Industrial bases to compete, Unified elites aligned with national interest. Instead, Africa entered globalization fragmented, indebted, and politically vulnerable as Africa still is today! The result? Value left Africa faster than it entered, Local industries collapsed under import pressure, Elites captured rents while populations absorbed costs, Even when Africa “grew,” it grew without transformation. Growth without development!

China: Partner, Exploiter, or Mirror?

China is not innocent in Africa’s story but it is also not unique. China exploits: weak governance, elite corruption, poor negotiation capacity. In other words, China exploits the same African weaknesses others always have. The lesson is not “China is bad.” The lesson is: No external power will save Africa from itself.

History matters here. As historian Roy Casagranda often reminds his students, civilizations rise when they seize systemic disruptions moments when old orders weaken and new rules are written.

Africa has missed such moments before: After World War II, after independence, After the Cold War, after the 2008 financial crisis, each time, others moved fast. Africa hesitated.

The collapse of globalization creates space for: Industrial policy, Selective protection, Regional production, sovereign economic planning In short: development on Africa’s terms.

But this will not happen automatically. If African leaders: remain rent-seeking, outsource thinking, and wait for permission, then Africa will miss this moment too.

This is not a call for isolation. It is a call for intelligent disengagement from a system that never served Africa. Globalization is not dying because Africa rejected it. It is dying because its creators no longer need it. That creates danger, but also opportunity. Wise Africans must recognize this moment, articulate it, and organize around it. If they don’t, others will, again.

Yes! Those who refuse to recognise the current realities will be left behind. Great thinking, Prof.

Africans must think home, think internal and stop being a begger continent. Enough is enough. We have the resources; problem is greed of the leaders.

Valid points well articulated. The big question is how does Africa participate in a global economy it does not seem to understand and is structured by those who are only willing to exploit the continent.
    Thanks for this stimulating insight.

    Prof.,
    Na wa~oh!
Your narration is mind bugling and revealing. We (Africa) can not continue to shy away from this truth of yours. Is it that we can’t stand strong by ourselves as Africans mentally?
I think Africa lack the competent visionary leadership required to change the narrative.
